On Liminality.

The Threshold is the Place to Pause – Goethe

Liminality, as a notion of being on the threshold, runs deeply within the core of this collective of artists.

Having worked as a psychotherapist and researcher in world religions for many years, I was always fascinated by the process of change and, in particular, by the liminal phase: that space which stands between an old and a new way of being; an entry into the unknown.

While undertaking my Master’s at the Royal College of Art, I discovered that many of my colleagues were also exploring liminality through their making. Indeed, every creative endeavour requires the courage to lean into the unknown.

Standing at the threshold of change, social, ecological, and creative, we seek new ways of relating: to one another, to place, to nature. We honour the grey areas of not knowing, the discoveries made through process, and the imagination’s capacity to weave together the material and the immaterial.

As we each face change – personally, collectively, and globally – important questions must be asked.

Humanity is living through a period of unprecedented transformation. The old paradigms arecrumbling, and we have been catapulted into a stage of not knowing. Here, we face a choice: to return to the familiar for a sense of stability and certainty, or to have the courage to sit with the unknown, to navigate its waters until we find ourselves on a new shore.

From this shared resonance, Liminal Matters was born, an arts-based collective exploring the unknown through the creative process. The pieces you see in this exhibition act as talismanic objects, created deep within our personal rites of passage.

Each exhibition enters into dialogue with its surroundings, its architecture, atmosphere, andcommunities. Through this, we hope to illuminate possibilities for a more connected, conscious world: a space for collective becoming.

We warmly invite you to pause with us at the threshold, and we hope you enjoy the show.
